MILDRED CHALUPSKY

Mildred (Vesely) Chalupsky passed away quietly at her home in Shakerag Hollow Farm in South Pittsburg, Tennessee on February 2, 2023, she was 96.  She is survived by her son James and grandson Stephen, his wife, Kelly and two great grandchildren, Bryce and Brennen all in Northern Virginia.  Also surviving is her sister, Libby (Vesely) Dvorak and brother, Charles Vesely both living in Iowa.

Mildred was born on October 21, 1926 in Elberon, Iowa and attended schools there that included Iowa Teacher’s College.  She met Fred Chalupsky in Vining, Iowa and they married in New Orleans during WWII.  Fred was a WWII vet who served in the European Theater.  Upon his return they lived in Washington, DC/Northern Virginia where her son James was born (1949).  Mildred followed her husband to an assignment in Japan (1950-52) during the post-war occupation.  While in Japan she earned a professor degree in Ikebana (flower arranging).  Son, John, was born in Yokohama, Japan (1952).  The family returned to the United States to an assignment at the Pentagon.  The family spent the majority of Fred’s military career in and around Washington, DC.  There was also a three-year tour to Heidelberg, Germany (1958-61), during the Berlin Wall crisis.  The family returned from Germany and bought and lived on a farm in Nokesville, Virginia.  Mildred’s interests included oil painting, ceramics, sewing, knitting and raising horses and cattle.  She won awards for her oil paintings and has some of her work in the Smithsonian Institute’s archives.  As a military wife for 29 years, she ultimately accompanied her husband to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he retired from the Army and became a federal judge in 1971.  The family bought a farm and moved to South Pittsburg, Tennessee.  While there, she continued with Pinzgauer cattle, Arabian horses and real estate investment.  She even dabbled in racing Arabian horses.  Mildred was a member of the Chattanooga City Farmers and a board member of the Chattanooga Arabian Horse Club.
