James "Les" Toon Obituary

James Leslie "Les" Toon, 75, passed away on February 23, 2025, in Powells Crossroads, Tennessee.

Les was born on November 14, 1949, in Anderson, Indiana, and graduated from Morristown High School. He attended Anderson College, where he played tennis, before making the decision to serve his country. Enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, Les was stationed at Patton Barracks in Heidelberg, Germany, as a Specialist 4th Class in the 529th Military Police Company Honor Guard. Following an honorable discharge, he continued his education at East Tennessee State University through the VA Bill.

Les built a career as a skilled woodworker with extensive experience in general construction. He was a member in the Carpenter’s Local Union 74.

Les was deeply devoted to family - he was a dedicated son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He shared 47 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Ruth. Together, they raised two daughters: Miller Toon Foutch (Nathan) of Knoxville and Becca Toon Brown (Kevin) of Baxter, Tennessee. In later years, Les found immense joy in being "Bubbie" to their five beloved grandchildren—Abby, Harper, Sam, Maggie, and Amelia. His loyal bulldog, Otis, was also a constant companion.

He was preceded in death by his dad James Garrison Toon, mother Vasso Blackman Toon, and brother John David Toon. He had many close family members and friends across the country and within their small community.

Les will be buried with honors at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in a private ceremony.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday March 8, at the Sulphur Springs Methodist Church community room from 1-3 Central Time, 329 Sulphur Springs Road, Powells Crossroads, TN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aim Center at 472 W. MLK Blvd., Chattanooga, TN 37402.
