Edward Randolph Hurt
On May 3rd, 2021, Edward Randolph Hurt, age 69, always known to family and friends as “Randy,” passed away peacefully at his home in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
Randy is survived by his wife, Joan Claiborne Hurt, also of South Pittsburg; sons, Carter Hurt and Ethan Hurt of Nashville, Tennessee (mother, Joan Kuykendall Hurt), stepchildren, Kayla Claiborne, Cameron Claiborne, and sister Jayne (m. Randall) Bellows, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is preceded in his passing by his parents, Dr. Joseph E. Hurt, and Mrs. Gay M. Hurt.
Born April 16th, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee, Randy attended Two Rivers High School in Donelson, Tennessee, eventually graduating from Peabody Demonstration School in Nashville, TN in 1970. After graduation from high school, he attended Middle Tennessee State University, graduating with dual majors in German Literature and Psychology. He then earned his master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Tennessee.
Randy worked as a social worker for the State of Tennessee and non-profit mental health organization, Centerstone; before moving on to instruct in Psychology and Social Services at Martin Methodist College. He served on the faculty at Martin for the remainder of his working career, enriching the higher education of countless students who remember him fondly. In addition to teaching, he also extended his counseling services into the realm of private practice, first in the city of Brentwood, Tennessee, then in Pulaski, Tennessee. After retirement, he enjoyed his remaining years in his South Pittsburg cabin with his wife.
In addition to being a loving father and husband, Randy was also a committed lifelong musician with an unfaltering appreciation of all creative arts. A genre-spanning multi-instrumentalist, proficient at guitar, banjo, and mandolin to name a few, his musical talent and knowledge were remarkable to all who knew him. Randy was also an avid reader, and enjoyed cooking, waterskiing, and the companionship of his dogs, of which he owned many over the years.
