Charles "Chuck" Young Obituary

CHARLES “CHUCK” WILBURN YOUNG

Charles “Chuck” Wilburn Young, 86 of Jasper, TN, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022 and entered his eternal home in heaven. He was a believer in Jesus and was thankful for the forgiveness and new life he received.  He was born in Hamilton, Alabama in July of 1935. He traveled around the country with his family and began working at the young age of eight, doing odd jobs and then working alongside them while they picked cotton, fruits, and vegetables in the fields as migrant workers. At the age of 15, he moved to California to live with his sister and brother-in-law and to begin training in a new career in construction as a lather.

At 19, he met the pretty and smart Laferna (Fern) Fox then they were soon married and had a long marriage of 59 years. During those 59 years they raised two daughters, gained two sons-in-law that they lovingly called sons, were granted the privilege of being grandparents to three grandsons and one granddaughter and then were blessed to be great-grandparents to 12.  Chuck was a very diligent worker and was never without a job, sometimes holding down more than one position at a time. One of his chief goals was to be a good provider for his family and that his family would never know the poverty that he lived through as a child. Through his hard work, wheeling and dealing and love of a good bargain, he managed to provide well for his family. He and his family lived in California, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Some of the things that made him “Chuck” were: His ability to drive any vehicle anywhere, even mastering the steepest hills of San Francisco, all while driving a straight shift (some of the streets were so steep the city closed them off to traffic years ago). He was a perfectionist in his construction work. He loved good horses and enjoyed owning and showing them in local, state and national horse shows. He was civic minded and would work feverishly to get things passed or blocked depending on the benefits or detriment to his community. He loved to talk and could start up a conversation with anyone. He was tenacious when trying to figure out a problem, working and fretting over it until he would eventually solve it.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Chloe Young; his wife, Laferna Young; sister, Wynona West; his brothers, J.W. Young and Norman Young; two infant sisters; brothers-in-law, Al West and Bob Hoff and sister-in-law, Maudie Young.

He is survived by his daughters, Sherry (Mark) Wesson and Sheila (Jeff) Watson; grandchildren, Chris (Rachel) Wesson, Greg (Caroline) Wesson, Matt Wesson, and Rachel (Drayton) Blackgrove; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Chloe, Ellie, Silas, Nathan, Louis, Katherine, Joseph, Abby, Cora, Samuel, and John-Max Wesson; sister, Juanita Hoff; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family.
