I really enjoyed working with Gene at Silverdale when he was the Chaplain. Thank you for sharing the beautiful pictures. I enjoyed viewing them. I know he will be on earth missed but what a wonderful Christmas he will be having in Heaven.

Message from Jerry and Sue Bales-Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle Charter Memer
December 7, 2017 1:07 PM

Gene was introduced to our sheepfold at a time when we were batterred, bruised, hurt and without a shepherd. Under his leadership, along with other God fearing men in our congregation, the congregation bought property, and built what is now known as “Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle” in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. A part from having to pay for some of the work that had to be inspected by the county inspector, the congregation completed building the rest of the church. That was 41 years ago and Sequoyah remains a viable, thriving, and lively Church. We will forever be grateful for Gene’s leadership, love for the Church, and devotion to all of us. I know when Gene entered the Gates of Heaven, no doubt he wanted to see the Lord first and foremost...I know that ‘s who I want to see first ! I liked to think when Gene get s the opportunity to see and talk with those already there he will tell them “whatever we went thru on earth, has all been worth it now that we’re home” We love and appreciate you Gene!

Message from Allan & Liz Templeton & Isaiah

Until we meet again Bro. Gene, save us a spot at the table, cause you know us Baptist we love our fellowship time especially when a meal is involved. Everyone I make a pineapple upside down Bundt cake I will think of you. Tim, Hannah and Paul your dad was one of a kind. He came into our lives at a time that we really needed him. Not only our church but in our personal life. He was there for Allan and I the first time Isaiah got involved with drugs and had to be admitted to the hospital. I'll never forget him and Diane showing up at Mountain view. He was there to see another person when he saw us and came over and set with us and prayed with us. I hadn't said anything to my church family but I know God laid it on his heart to visit that person so he could run into us. He will never know how much that meant to me and Allan. He spoke with Isaiah and continue to pray and speak to Isaiah about his choices he was making and when Isaiah almost overdoses 12 months ago, he prayed with me and prayed for Isaiah's salvation . Praise God Isaiah has completed almost 11 months at Pilgrim Ministry and has turned his life around. I have witness Bro Gene on several occasions. Going to visit people and praying with them and for them even people he has never meet before. He loved God's children. And they loved him. He was kindly referred to as papa Gene. He was one of a kind. He taught us to love everyone. Just know y'all will always be a part of our family and in our prayers. Diane, we thank God that you follow Bro. Gene and joined our church. Bro Gene was a special man, he was your prayer partner and taught you so much and I know you will miss him dearly. But I think he leaves with you so much to carry on for him and to continue sharing God's love . We love you and you will always be family. Praying that God be with each of you in this last days . Don't be sad, rejoice because I know he is celebrating . And he waits for us to join him.

Message from Georgia and Phil Hampton
December 5, 2017 7:50 PM

I met Bro. Gene on my front porch in the winter of 2014. He and Bill Eller came to invite Phil and me back to church. We had been attending our son's church for 7 years in Rossvile GA but he had moved to Knoxville TN to a church there. Phil and I had both been sick the day of the visit and Phil was in bed sleeping but I went to the door. Something about Bro. Gene grabbed me that day! He exuded kindness and humility. Just a sweet smile and told me to go back inside and not get cold when they finished their invitation. I told Phil I really like him and we went back to our old home church. Our lives have never been the same since having Bro. Lewis as our pastor. I cannot express in words what he meant to us and how he impacted our lives. We are crushed at his passing even though we knew he was older; it's just that he never looked or acted his age and we were hoping for many more years with him. It all happened so fast and we are heartbroken. There will never be another Bro. Gene for me. You as a family are so blessed to have had him in your life. May God be a great comfort and blessing to you at this sad and difficult time. Thank you for sharing him; I'm sure it wasn't always easy having a pastor as a Dad. God bless you all.
