HYLIS CARVER BIBLE

Hylis Carver Bible, 92 died peacefully on February 9, 2024, in Whitwell, Tennessee at Valley View Senior Living.  Hylis was a resident of Haletown, Tennessee for 69 years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Jack Bible; parents, William Cisiro and Elizabeth Ellen Hardin Carver; brothers, Herman M. C., Homer R. C., John W. C. and Franklin Carver; sister, Edna Mae Carver Hardy and daughter, Tena Bible Wells (Gary) of Scottsboro, Alabama.  She is survived by her son, Jerry Bill Bible (Deborah) of Mullins Cove, Tennessee; sisters, Kathleen Pendly of Jasper, Georgia and Opal Carver of Rydal, Georgia.  She is also survived by four grandchildren, James William Bible (Tiffany), Sarah Bible Willis (Joe), Christopher David Wells (Kathleen), Haley Wells Hare (Joe); four great grandchildren, Hylis Hare, Ruth Hare, Chase Wells and Tanner Wells.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Hylis was born September 13, 1931, in Jasper, Georgia into a large family with few assets.  In spite of these humble beginnings, she quickly learned the satisfaction and rewards of hard work during the depression and the years that followed.  She also learned the importance of having a loving family and friends.  She passed her love, her pride in a job well done and her work ethic onto her children and anyone who came in contact with her.  So strong was her pride and work ethic that she insisted on mowing her own yard until she was nearly 90 years old.  She was extremely talented and forever a champion of the underdog.  Having not been blessed with an abundance of money or possessions while growing up, she was unselfish and quick to share with those in need.  She particularly loved to give away things that were dear to her, hoping the recipient would enjoy having the item as much as she did.  She also loved to help her children and other family members without receiving any credit for her actions.  She was proud of the accomplishments of her children and as they arrived her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was always supportive of her children and encouraged them to set high goals for themselves.  She commanded the respect of her family, friends and neighbors.

Hylis had a devout Christian faith and was a member of Hales Chapel Methodist Church.  She believed in God’s great plan and a man’s need to follow God’s plan wherever it might take us.  She reminded us that all would be fine so long as we believed and kept faith in God and his teaching.  Hylis was Past Worthy Matron of the Order of The Eastern Star, Chapter 124, Jasper, Tennessee.

Hylis started and ran several businesses during her life.  She and her late husband Bill owned and operated Bill’s Restaurant in Haletown for many years.  She later created and operated for many years Hylis Bible’s Beauty Shop also in Haletown and later, owned and operated Hylis Bible’s Art Gallery in Jasper, Tennessee until she retired.
